Poker Odds - Calculating Odds in Texas Hold'em Poker

Poker Odds - Calculating Odds in Texas Hold'em Poker:

Last Update: 9/16/2004 (Thanks Aces for pointing out minor errors)

A note about math: Yes, there is math on this page. When working with poker odds and probabilities, you will be required to know
at least some elementary algebra. Now, while I might have sympathy for those who are bad at math and don't
like to do it - if you're playing poker and have a grudge against math, then this game is not for you. If
you simply want to memorize your odds for each type of hand, so be it, but the person who can calculate poker odds
on the fly will be a far better player in the long run.

Texas Hold 'Em Poker Rules

Texas Hold 'Em Poker Rules:

Texas Hold 'Em (or Texas Holdem) is the version of Poker played in many casinos, and seen on the Travel Channel's World Poker Tour and ESPN's World Series of Poker. These are the basic rules for Texas Hold 'Em Poker. The Shuffle, The Deal and The Blinds The dealer shuffles a standard 52-card deck. (In casinos, the dealer never plays. A round disc -- known as a "dealer button" -- moves clockwise from player to player with each hand. The button marks which player would be the dealer if the deal were advanced from player to player as the game went along.) Most Texas Hold 'Em Poker games start with the two players to the left of the dealer (the button) putting a predetermined amount of money into the pot before any cards are dealt, ensuring that there's something to play for on every hand. zSB(3,3);if(!z336){var zIsb=gEI("adsb");if(zIsb){zIsb.style.display="inline";zIsb.style.height="0px";zIsb.style.width="0px";}var zIss=gEI("adss");if(zIss){zIss.style.display="inline";zIss.style.height="0px";zIss.style.width="0px";}}Sponsored Links

This is called "posting the blinds." Most often, the "first blind" -- the player to the left of the dealer -- puts up half the minimum bet, and the "second blind" puts up the full minimum bet. Each player is dealt two cards, face down. These are known as the "hole cards."
