TMO's Guide to Playing Online Poker on Your Mac

Images-9Finally - a guide to playing poker online on your mac. Nice!!!!

If you want to play online poker on your Mac, you can either play at the sites that support the Mac platform natively, or you can use Virtual PC to access sites that cater to the Windows platform. I've done both, and I put together this guide to help make it less confusing for those looking to join the massive world of online poker.

I've divided my look at all the major poker sites into those that support the Mac natively and those that are Windows-only, and I've included performance information for sites that require Virtual PC. My recommendations are based on Virtual PC 7.x, the fastest version of the software yet put out, used on a fast Mac. I've also played on most of these sites with Virtual PC 6 on a 1.2 GHz PowerBook, so that, too, can be done, though I don't recommend it.

Stainless Steel Playing Cards

Stainlesssteelcards

We think this could be a bit dangerous to have around your poker game if people start throwing cards. That being said - I like the thought of etched stainless steel playing cards. Heck - this could set off a revolution in playing cards, a new industry of dealers wearing gloves just to shuffle and deal the cards, and then there's the yet to be invented stainless steel card shuffler. Wild!

You know, there are some items that you can expect will just be relegated to the famous and the uber-collectors as far as ownership is concerned. Case in point, these stainless steel playing cards. The card designs are etched into the metal, and arrive at your door in sheets of metal rather than in a deck of cards. The sheets can be displayed on a wall, which would be great for a poker room, or you can press the cards out of the metal sheet which will leave you with a $313.95 USD deck of standard-sized playing cards.

Tournament Class 500-Piece Poker Chip Set

We'll admit it. We used to cover just poker chips - oh yeah - that's the site's name. But lately our poker playing has been more online, more video game focused, and more DVD/TV viewing of poker than playing in person. All that being said - getting together with friends and talking trash with a little poker and some money at stake is still the best. We think this $130 buck set is a great way to get started.

Tournament Class poker players and wannabes too will appreciate the professional heft of these 11.5-gram chips. For under $130, you get 500 poker chips neatly nested in the velvet lining of an impressive black aluminum briefcase, 200 red, 200 white, 100 blue. Also included are a Dealer chip, Big Blind chip and a Little Blind chip. Additionally, 10 poker dice are included. The complete set also comes with two 54-card decks and a basic rulebook to help beginners get started on a lifetime of fun.

The Big Poker Gamble

39964249 Chips Bbc203 Agreed. It's a big gamble but a fun gamble to make.

The business of online poker is booming, giving players the chance to win a fortune from the comfort of their own front room. More than $1m (£575,000) are staked every minute by enthusiasts like Jane Foster, or Ms Fortune, as she's known online. "It's grown and grown, and it's done very well for me," says Ms Foster, a single mother of three from Manchester who is studying for a degree in IT. "That $30 that I put in two-and-a-half years ago has grown into thousands over the last couple of years."

SEGA Casino includes craps, blackjack, roulette, Texas hold'em, and baccarat. Players will also be able to unlock four poker variations, as well as Keno, and a dice game called Chuck-a-Luck. Three game modes are available; free play, in which players can play to unlock other games and levels, casino mode, in which players play against a computer to win play money, and wireless mode. In wireless mode, up to five players can connect to a single game, using only one cartridge, and play against each other.
