Casinos bet on the new chip identification

FT.com / Companies / IT - Casinos bet on the new chip identification:
You are one of the casino's most important high rollers. The private jet lands in Las Vegas and a limousine is waiting to take you to a palatial suite where a butler is chilling a couple of bottles of Cristal. Downstairs the casino bosses wait for your arrival. After a personal chef prepares your dinner, washed down with a couple of $2,000 bottles of wine, you go to the tables. At the casino cage, you cash in for $100,000 and start battling against the blackjack dealers. You are winning and every time you make a bet, you slip a few casino chips into your pocket for safe-keeping. Then your luck changes and you can't catch a hand. The money in front of you disappears and you tell your hosts that you have lost your allowance for the night. And then the casino host asks: "What about the $29,500 you have stowed in your pocket? I know you're not busted out. When I gave you the limo, suite and the butler, you promised to play until you won or lost $100,000. Keep playing if you don't want to get downgraded to a normal room."

Leading Poker Chips Retailer PokerShopping Launches Three Local European Versions

Leading Poker Chips Retailer PokerShopping Launches Three Local European Versions:
PokerShopping, the world’s leading online poker chips retailer, has launched websites in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Denmark following booming consumer demand.
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 4, 2005 -- PokerShopping.com, the world’s leading online poker chips retailer, has launched local versions of its online store in the United Kingdom, Spain and Denmark. The three sites are in English, Spanish and Danish respectively.

“These are three markets that I feel very strongly about,” said Marcus Holmstrom, head of online marketing at PokerShopping. “It was an easy to decision to expand into these countries since the demand for poker products has simply been a lot higher than the supply and our prices are less than half compared to the few local stores that do exist.”

Poker fans in the U.K., Spain and Denmark now have access to a wide range of poker supplies at the lowest prices through PokerShopping. “We are currently working on broadening our selection even further,” said Mr. Holmstrom. “We are getting an increasing number of requests for high-end products as poker is becoming the number one hobby for many people.”

Horseshoe officials cut ribbon at poker room

Horseshoe officials cut ribbon at poker room:
The manager of Horseshoe Casino's new poker room said Tuesday he'd strive to rebuild the client base of players that the property had when he ran the casino's poker room that operated from 1998 to 2000."A lot of players here were from the Dallas market, so it's getting those guys and ladies to come back here," said Dennis Jones, who was among several officials and a showgirl who posed for photos Tuesday at the room's ribbon cutting.Horseshoe opened its 11-table room about the same time that Hollywood Casino expanded its room, which it's had since 2002, from 10 to 15 tables. Both say the poker craze spurred by televised tournaments led them to replace other more-profitable games with poker tables, with the hopes that card players or their friends would spend more money elsewhere.Horseshoe is still considering whether to offer comps for food or hotel rooms, a practice it used during the old poker room's operation that regular players say they want to see return to the market, Jones said."We still are basically trying to analyze the business to see where it's at," he said. "There's been no official decision on it, but we'll continue to look at the numbers and see what's feasible."Hollywood also hasn't announced it will begin the practice, said spokeswoman Markey Washington.

Put a Smile on Dad's (Poker) Face: Bicycle Premium Masters Poker Set is What He Really Wants for Father's Day

Put a Smile on Dad's (Poker) Face: Bicycle Premium Masters Poker Set is What He Really Wants for Father's Day :
CINCINNATI, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Barbecue tools are boring. Ties are
tired. This Father's Day, chips are hip and all things poker dominate the
most wanted list.
If poker is Dad's passion, trade up his old plastic chips and dog-eared
cards for the Bicycle Premium Masters Poker Set from U.S. Playing Card Company
(USPC), and give his poker night the aura of an authentic casino tournament.
It will be hard for him to keep his poker face when you surprise him with this
handsome black lacquered wood "royal flush" case.
Inside, he will find everything he needs to turn poker night into a real
experience: 300 hefty 8-gram professional quality clay-filled chips that offer
the distinctive click heard in top casinos and card rooms around the world,
two decks of premium Bicycle brand cards that stand ready to "shuffle up and
deal," and a Texas Hold'em Rules Sheet for any newcomers to the table.
USPC invites poker enthusiasts to "Feel and Know the Difference" ...
pointing out "all chips are not created equal." The poker chips created for
this set feature rounded edges for better handling. They have a unique
"rough" feel that allows for easy stacking and shuffling. Other chips often
have flat edges and slick finishes that make for difficult shuffling or hand
control. The Bicycle chips yield a rich quality clicking sound, unlike many
others on the market that give off a "pinging" sound when stacked. High
quality heavy-weight clay chips like those in the Bicycle Premium Masters
Poker Set are preferred by poker players worldwide. They feature a centered
logo and authentic casino stripes molded into the chips.
"The Bicycle Premium Masters Poker Set was developed to bring a new
element of fun and authenticity to America's favorite card game," said Scott
Kling, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for U.S. Playing Card Company,
the world's leader in playing cards for more than 100 years and the
manufacturer of the best-selling Bicycle and Bee brand cards. Poker is
believed to have popularized by soldiers during the Civil War.
It became the card game of riverboat gamblers and the Old West. US
Playing Card's decks have been the choice of poker players since 1880 and the
Bicycle brand was introduced in 1885. Today, with poker's popularity is at
its peak thanks to televised poker shows, Bicycle cards still stand as the
choice of American card players.
"Home poker games are catching on like wildfire across the country, and
players everywhere are seeking to replicate the kind of poker excitement they
see on television. The right equipment is essential," said Kling.
Dad may beat his opponents, but you can't beat the price or the value of
this handsome set, which retails for approximately $59 at Wal-Mart and
Walgreen's. The Bicycle Premium Masters Poker Set, which is being introduced
at Father's Day, will be in stores year round.

Poker News: World Poker Tour – Mirage Poker Showdown – Day Two.

Poker News: World Poker Tour – Mirage Poker Showdown – Day Two.:
Boy, today could to be a long day. That is all I can think about writing this story. The original design was to play down to 27 players, or the end of level 10. At the end of level 10, they still have 49 players in, and they have to play down to six today for TV. This could make for a long day, but the average stack only has about 35 big blinds, so maybe it won't be that bad.

Day two brought us another action filled day, as over 100 players bit the dust today, and can go about their business, and not be concerned with winning this event. Some of the prominent exits on day two were...Layne Flack, Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Tilley, Paul Phillips, Jesus Ferguson, David Williams, Scott Fischman, Mel Judah, David Pham, Barry Shulman, Huck Seed, and many others.

The big mover today was Gavin Smith, who went from the bottom/middle of the pack to second in chips. Notables with stacks include Toto Leonidas, who is third, and The Unabomber, who is in the top ten. It was not a great day for the Cardplayer Camp, as CEO/pop Barry, who started the day second in chips was out early to some tough luck (quad deuces for his opponent), and son Jeff, who began the day third in chips didn't run much better, and is going to have to stage a big rally to get to the money, and stage a small miracle to make it to the TV table.

Peoria Journal Star: Stakes are pretty low in this poker league

Peoria Journal Star: Stakes are pretty low in this poker league:

Thirty years ago a group of high-rolling and high-profile Peorians, including then-Bradley basketball coach Joe Stowell, got busted at a high-stakes poker game above Jimmie's Lock Shop. If they played their cards right now, those players might find themselves on television in homes throughout metropolitan Peoria. Such is the changed state of gambling.
Of course, they couldn't play their games in this part of the country today any more than they could have three decades ago. In Illinois it is illegal to play for money or prizes unless the games occur in a licensed casino. That's what put the Peoria Poker Club on dangerous ground recently.

Deseret News (Salt Lake City): Poker's popularity worries Utah officials:

A lot of people say the whole thing -- the poker tables for sale in supermarkets, the proliferation of Texas Hold'em tournaments, the way poker supplies flew off the shelves this Christmas season even in Salt Lake City -- started with a man whose improbable name is Chris Moneymaker.
