THE COMPANY behind Empire Poker, a leading online gambling site, is poised to become the next poker firm to attempt to make its stock-market debut, with a possible £500m flotation. Tradal, which has its headquarters in Limassol, Cyprus, is in exclusive talks with Numis, the stockbroker, to receive advice on its strategic options. NI_MPU('middle');Sources believe that it will decide to go for a listing in London. Another option would be to try to raise funding on the debt markets. No timetable has been set for a decision on its future strategy. Tradal is the latest of a number of poker sites to look at going public. Party Gaming, which operates the world’s largest online poker business, Party Poker, appointed investment banks Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein and Investec to advise on its options, including an IPO.
Let's say you come home from a night out on the town, and you suddenly find your husband being wrestled into a car, and driven off into the night. You freeze in a mix of panic, and terror, and you run into your home, and call the Police.
The Police come right over, and wind up using a helicopter to find this car, less than two miles from your home. After carefully approaching the house the car is parked in front of, Police get inside to discover...A poker game being played.
That was the case this past Saturday in Rialto, CA which is just east of Los Angeles. It seems a man's buddies needed one more player to get a game going. So, they drove to this man's house, and saw his car pulling up. Once the man was out of the car, they 'kidnapped' him, and took him (very willingly I'm sure) to the poker game right around the corner.
Check, bet, call, raise and fold. Each term alone can carry a variety of meanings, but as a combination, they make poker, a game that is growing in popularity with many college students today.
Students play with various different groups, with friends, with acquaintances and with people they’ve never met. They play at friends’ houses, apartments, in the dorms and online.
Jordan Morgan, economics junior, plays games around Norman and online. He said the popularity of the game seems to have grown in recent years based on the growth of online poker sites and poker on television.
It's just another weekday afternoon at Foxwoods Resort Casino and the wait for a seat at a poker table is well over an hour. All 81 tables, all 810 seats at New England's only poker room, are filled.
"Look around. This place is packed," says Mark Whittaker, a home theater installer from Ashland, Mass., who drove an hour and a half to play Texas Hold 'Em but is playing Omaha instead because of the wait. "And it's what, noon on a Wednesday?"
Not too long ago, many gaming executives considered rooms like this to be wasted space. The games are too long and the casino's cut too small to make poker anything but a dud for the bottom line.
LAS VEGAS/EWORLDWIRE/April 15, 2005 --- Gaming on television has glamorized, popularized and commercialized poker to the point that the game is everywhere. People are talking about poker all over the planet. Research suggests 50 million to 60 million people play poker at least once a month. The vast majority of players are doing it digitally in online gaming venues.Capitalizing on this popularity, The EMG Network, the world's first all digital network devoted exclusively to programming and content related to the multi-billion dollar gaming industry, has entered the gaming arena. For the time being readers shouldn't look for The EMG Network on television. The network is where the real action is, online at http://www.TheEMG.net, offering a distinct advantage over the other networks. The vast majority of gaming enthusiasts spend more time online playing the games than they do watching others play. Gaming is one of the Internet's largest moneymakers and provides an unlimited opportunity for EMG to reach it's online audience where they live. In addition to offering online video, blogs, forums, Web broadcasting, VoIP, chat rooms, personal and professional Web presence, newsletters, syndicated and original content and more, The EMG Network offers free roll casino style games and multi-player poker. However, they do not accept betting or wagering of any kind, the games are for entertainment and instructional use only.
Teri Braun stroked her chips for an extra second before tossing them all to the center of the table. "I'm all in," she declared, risking her winnings from the last four hours for a shot at $6,000. Then she laid down her pair of kings, and the men at the table groaned in defeat. It was a Saturday-night game of Texas Hold'em, the poker game that has exploded into the nation's casinos, living rooms and home computers in the last two years. Braun wasn't at a card house, but at her home in Leucadia. And the $6,000 wasn't real ---- it was all in chips.
Braun and her husband, David, host invitation-only tournaments for friends every two weeks. Players pay a $20 buy-in for a shot at the community jackpot, which is divvied up to the top players at the end of the night.
This is a big weekend for the organizers of the Park City Poker Roundup, a Texas Hold 'Em tournament set over four weekends. Not only will a final winner emerge on Sunday, but poker legend Chris Moneymaker will make an appearance Saturday to kick off weekend play. Moneymaker won instant fame and fortune two years ago when, as an amateur, he won a $40 online game to secure a seat at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, where he beat veteran players to capture a $2.5 million prize.
Tian plays poker with his buddies and signs up for tournaments around the city. But when the 20-year-old started getting 40s on his finance quizzes this semester, he started to re-evaluate the time he dedicates to the game. He stopped playing Internet poker during class and cut off the mind-numbing 12-hour online sessions at night. "It was really distracting me from school — and from sleeping," said Tian, an Augusta native. "I realized I'm in college for a reason, not just to play poker." Tian is one of thousands of college students who have tapped in to the national poker craze. While the game has been booming among every age group and social set, college campuses have emerged as the epicenter for those wanting to ante up. Despite the wild popularity, few schools have taken steps to address the burgeoning i
The comparison is loaded. Kazaa, the website that allows surfers to swap music tracks, has proven hugely popular and claims around 100 million users. But it is also tied up in a global tangle of lawsuits with the record industry and has been branded an "engine of copyright piracy to a degree of magnitude never before seen". Online gambling sites face their own legal hurdle. Despite the exploding popularity of internet betting, the global jackpot is theoretically offline to the digital croupiers.
It's not even noon yet on a Saturday and the poker room at Baccarat Casino is packed. Too packed. There are only 88 seats available in their weekly no-limit hold-'em tournament, and you can tell by looking that won't be enough.

University of Iowa freshman Lindsey Negaard was drawn to the online poker tournament by the free entry and thousands of dollars' worth of prizes."I really like to play poker," said Negaard , 19, of Bettendorf. "It's hard to find places to play on campus because it's not allowed in the dorms. It's also hard to play without putting a large sum of money down."But Negaard, who is scheduled to play in the tournament for the first time todayMore than 200 Iowa college students are competing in the 2005 College Poker Championship, an international online Texas Hold'em poker tournament that state regulators say is against the law."Internet gambling in Iowa is illegal," said David Werning , spokesman for the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, which regulates social and charitable gambling. "It doesn't matter what form it takes."The situation represents the legal trouble that Iowans risk when playing Texas Hold'em, a card game made increasingly popular by cable television coverage of tournaments.Small home poker games among friends that are not on school property, do not have entry fees, and have winnings only up to $50 in a 24-hour period are considered "social gambling" and are legal in Iowa. But games with winnings that exceed $50 and online poker games are illegal.
The cards have been laid down, and winners from this year's, as well as last year's Texas Hold'em tournaments will now compete in the Kat Klub's "tournament of champions" Wednesday and Thursday (April 20-21)." This year has been wonderful," said Kat Klub director Gary Roark. "The kids really have a good time. My whole room in the back is full of kids enjoying themselves (every tournament)."Those who have won a tournament, either this year or in 2004, and would like to participate in the tournament of champions should attend a meeting on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

As a result, this Friday, April 22nd, Violentfish - as his screen name appears - will focus on repeating this hard fought victory and attempt to land himself a lucrative seat in this year’s WSOP. “It’s every poker player’s dream to compete there (2005 WSOP)” said the ex-sales executive who quit his day job just over a year ago to play poker full time. Shortly after he realized that he had to face Mark again this upcoming Friday he commented “Mark is strong; I hope I have what it takes to repeat.” Violentfish also came in 3rd last week in the 25K point challenge and won over $1000.

hwartPoker Inc., inventors of the revolutionary new skill-based form of poker, ThwartPoker(TM), have selected Game Trust to tournament-enable their "Hold'em" smash hit that will be known as "Poker Blitz." Beginning this week on Miniclip.com (www.miniclip.com), players from around the world will be able to compete for cash and merchandise prizes in 4-player live tables. Players have an opportunity to compete for as much as $1,000 in a single game."Poker Blitz" is a unique and strategic twist on classic "Hold'em" poker, in which players choose the cards they want, rather than being dealt a hand of random cards. All players select from the same deck and must pick, block and dodge the selections of their opponents. If a player picks a card that was also selected by another player in a current or previous round, the players are both blocked and dealt cards that have no value. In essence, "Poker Blitz" takes all of the guess work out of poker, ensuring that a player wins because of their skill rather than their luck.

The field for the WPT Championship all started in the same room for the first time since this tournament began. This made things much easier on the tournament stuff, not to mention the journalists (like me) who had been hustling from room to room to cover the tournament properly.
But 164 players started today, and everyone had dreams of the $2.8 million top prize. All but 64 players will get paid today, and that certainly makes things a lot easier on the bigger stacks, who know they probably have some room to work. The shorter stacks were going to move quickly, but the average chip count relative to the blinds was such that we would not see the mass exodus we saw early on in day two of this epic event.
Early exits included Josh Arieh, who was out in the first ten minutes of action today. Also out early was Annie Duke, who had the tough moment of the tournament so far, when her Kings ran into David Williams' Aces. Since David's Mom was sitting right behind him, you got the sense that no King was coming. Wrong. Good news for Annie: King on the river, bad news for Annie: There was a 10m J, and Q on the board also, and the King gave Williams a straight, and sent Annie straight for the door.
The YES!!!........DOH!!! award goes to Michael Hauptmann, who saw the 9 of hearts on the river, making four hearts on the board, and Michael thought he had outdrawn his opponent, and let out a "yes!", and gave the table a pound. His opponent, who had made a heart flush on the turn was also happy, as the 9 of hearts gave him a straight flush, and Hauptmann was from ecstasy to agony in one second.
Some name players made big moves early, as Grinder won two huge pots in the first level of play, and was chip leader with over 700,000 chips early. Also moving early was Greg Raymer, who moved in on Made Andersen with an open ended straight draw, and got there on the turn. Mads had an overpair, and was not overjoyed at his bad luck. Gus Hansen was sweating him, and they had some choice words in Danish about the situation...Unfortunately, my Danish translator is broken, though I doubt the words they were using were in the dictionary.
AS VEGAS -- Every day hundreds of Las Vegas residents break the law for a shot at fame and fortune or just a bit of fun. They work in casinos and in offices. They pay their taxes and hold steady jobs. And many don't even know they are lawbreakers. Among them is Jeff Larsen, a casino worker at the Bellagio who has turned a hobby into a part-time job. From home, Larsen now plays up to eight games of online poker at a time on two computers. Gambling in Internet poker rooms up to 40 hours a week nets Larson about the same kind of money he makes at his casino job. "It's convenient, the games are really good and you've got people on the Internet just giving their money away," he said. "Playing in a casino is just getting old for a lot of people." David Matthews, a webmaster for the Las Vegas Advisor consumer newsletter, said he makes about $150 per hour for the 20 or so hours per week he plays online poker. "I can't afford not to play," Matthews said. "If I decided to play full time I could probably make $30,000 a month. "I know people who've given up their day jobs." Online poker is faster, doesn't require tipping a dealer and often features cash bonuses for players, he said. It also draws players who are "fast and loose," translating into good games at all hours, he said.
Forty-three people, most of them in jeans and T-shirts, sit at five green-felt tables in a corner of Strazlo’s Deli and Pub on Coventry Lane. In front of them are playing cards, black, green and purple chips and beverages of all persuasions. Beer in brown longneck bottles and mixed drinks, soda and water in clear plastic cups. At least one tobacco smoker is at every nine-seat table, and curls of milky-white vapor lift lazily to a string of banners near the ceiling advertising NASCAR and Miller Lite. It’s a Monday night, and this is the first stage of a 20-week Texas Hold ’Em poker tournament sponsored by Strazlo’s and four other Fort Wayne bars. Top prize provided by the taverns: $5,000. The event is perfectly legal, say state excise police. There’s no entry fee, no cash wagering, no drink minimums.

Sound like a gambler's nightmare? Try Jeremy Enke's path to payday.
The real estate agent and 1994 Jefferson High graduate scored $15,000 from online gambling site www.goldenpalace. com to play in the World Series of Poker, a tournament featuring the who's who of professional players, rolling ESPN cameras and a minimum $10,000 buy-in.

The catch is that Enke, 28, will play the tables in a form-fitting bunny suit with the Web site's address stitched into the belly.
The stunt isn't the first time the self-proclaimed entrepreneur has dabbled in online poker. He's done promotions for Web sites and penned a book, "Party Riches," detailing how to promote online gambling.
he game of online poker is under constant attack from the government of the United States. The current administration, as those before it, use old-fashioned and out of date laws to attempt to force people to not play the online game. Because of such, many advertisers, web search engines and credit cards companies will not allow or permit usage of their products in the pursuit of online poker or gaming.
There seems to be a company and website, though, that is making a move to attack the status quo. ThwartPoker and Game Trust have entered into an agreement to place ThwartPoker's new Hold 'Em game "Poker Blitz" on the Game Trust website miniclip.com. Players will be able to compete on the game site for physical prizes and cash that could total up to $1,000 per single game.

Online poker tutorial service PokerSchoolOnline.com (PSO) recently sponsored a charity tournament to benefit one of the site's members, who is currently undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. The site's founders discovered that David Wolner had been diagnosed with the disease and thus decided to organize an online poker tournament to help his foot the steep cost of his treatment.
The no-limit hold'em tournament raised more than $5,000, which was funneled directly to Wolner. In addition to the tournament's proceeds, PSO added an extra $1,000, making the total donation over $6,000. The tournament, which was hosted in cooperation with online poker room BugsysClub.com, attracted close to 200 players.

Online poker for MAC users is somewhat of a murky situation but there's a shining light at the end of the tunnel. One of the best online poker sites (and our featured online poker room) caters to MAC users. The name of the site is PokerRoom.com and was designed by Macintosh users. I'm a PC user but these days I spend most of my time at PokerRoom.com and here's why...
Not only do they have an aesthetically pleasing game client but they provide the entire gamut of online poker cash games, single, and multi table tournaments. Whether you play poker on a MAC or not; PokerRoom.com has the best player resources and promotions on the web, bar none; I'll explain why throughout the remainder of this page...
Kenneth Paul writes "Anyone had much experience playing poker online with their Mac? I recently signed up for an account at Hollywood Poker and their java software works fine with Safari. Any other ones that people use? I wonder if James Woods plays with a Mac?" I use PokerRoom.com and haven't had any problems at all with their software. If there's interest, we should start a MacSlash private table. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Also, I use Neteller to transfer money to PokerRoom, since my bank doesn't appear to let their ATM or debit cards be used at gambling sites. At first, I was a little concerned about Neteller, but over the past few years I've grown to be a tad bit more trusting of them as more and more positive reviews are posted.
Update: Wed night at 9PM Easter (6 Pacific), we'll have a MacSlash poker game in private room MacSlash at Pokerroom.com. If you like the game, stop by and play with us. It's a very low limit game, so it should be fun without the stakes being prohibitive. :)
1. What online poker sites are Mac / Macintosh compatible? The only online poker site that natively supports Mac poker players is Poker Room (www.pokerroom.com). However, Mac poker players have reported the following sites work with VirtualPC: PokerStars, Ultimate Bet and Party Poker. I took off the Party Poker link as it's reported to work, but has serious resource issues.
In the end, I do recommend Poker Room if you don't want the hassles of tinkering with VirtualPC. That and the Poker Room was actually developed by Mac users!
Update (August 27th, 2004): It looks like Pacific Poker now offers a 'Quick Play - No Download' option, which is a Java client as well. Pacific Poker has some soft games, so they are worth a try, although their software is not as great as some of the other sites in my opinion.
No one saw it coming but with the recent explosion in online poker it was only a matter of time. You see the online poker community has been fiercely debating for quite some time now whether or not cheating is occurring online. Methods discussed run the gamut from online poker bots to collusion to card scanners. Well the lid has just been blown wide open. A self confessed online poker cheater has just revealed all of his methods in a downloadable e-book. Ken Chan has finally done what no else has – he actually teaches people simple ways in which they can cheat online and make big money. He outlines several strategies that he has been using for quite some time and explains them in easy to follow step by step instructions.
"Britepoker's Guide to Dominating Poker," hosted by Harvard graduate John Barkett, contains 13 chapters of poker techniques aimed at solving these problems. The video teaches how often you should be calling (rarely) and how often you should be raising and folding (often). Betting techniques are taught based on a players position and discussed for each of the four betting rounds found in Texas Hold'em (pre-flop, flop, turn, and river). The video also covers the techniques such as check-raising, bluffing, calculating odds, how to read tells from opponents and more. Advanced players will not be disappointed with the amount of content found in the video.

The future of televised poker is safe. After the insanity that I witnessed in San Jose, with Danny Nguyen hitting running sevens to rescue himself, and eventually win the tournament, I believe I wrote that the San Jose WPT episode will go down as the best ever. Move over San Jose, here comes the World Poker Tour Season Three Championship.
I'm going to tell you right now, the words I write will not do this program justice. If you are a fan of poker - you should have been here. If you could not be here, watch the episode when it airs. The beats, and the suckouts contained in this article are not fiction, but they should be. To lend a tiny bit of perspective, let me tell you the first fact you should know about the season three championship. The season two championship had virtually the same amount of chips in play, and was resolved in 78 total hands. Tonight's season three championship took 191 hands to decide. The average WPT taping takes 4 hours. This taping tonight was only 10 minutes under double that - 7 hours, 50 minutes.
The popularity of poker is rapidly increasing locally as well as nationally. Its popularity is fueled by a combination of television exposure, technology, and the opportunity to win big money and/or prizes. Local bars and restaurants are hosting regularly scheduled free poker tournaments to help draw in more business. Cable channels such as ESPN and the Travel Channel showcase the extremely popular World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour. In addition, television advertisements for online poker rooms are on the rise. The most popular flavor of poker is Texas No Limit Hold ''em. In a No Limit Hold ''em, a player can go "all in" and bet all of their chips on any given hand, which adds a great deal of excitement to the game.
More than seven grueling hours after the kickoff of the World Poker Tour Championship at the Bellagio resort Sunday afternoon, Los Angeles resident Tuan Le took home the top prize of $2.9 million in what has become the world's most expensive poker tournament.
Now in its third year at the Bellagio, the tournament draws only a few hundred people compared with the thousands that gather each spring for the World Series of Poker. But with a $25,000 buy-in, the Bellagio event attracts the world's best and most aggressive players.

Subpoenas were sent to Esquire's publisher, Kevin O'Malley in addition to a number of magazine staff members. The subpoenas were sent in response to an eight-page advertising insert, appearing in the April issue of Esquire. The segment was sponsored by Bodog's online poker division, Bodog Poker, and featured tips for playing online Texas hold'em, along with listing URLs and images from the website. In addition, BoDog CEO Calvin Ayre appeared in the ad, encouraging readers to join him online at Bodog.com. Aside from the promotional aspects of the insert, the ad included the necessary "Void where prohibited by law" disclaimer. Although Esquire's May and June issue were due to include a similar insert, the magazine's publisher is reportedly thinking about removing the ads.
Rake rebates are the newest way for online poker players to get the elusive edge over the house. An enterprising website recently unveiled their ingenious program that makes online poker players winners overnight. (PRWEB) March 29, 2005 -- There are millions of online poker players today. And most of them are losing players.
But now, thanks to an enterprising poker site, there is now a way to guarantee that you win money playing poker online. Rake rebates are the new way to make money playing poker and they are taking the online poker world by storm.
A rake rebate is a deal that 3rd party websites make between online poker rooms and individual players to give a percentage of the profit the poker site makes from that player back to him or her. This profit is called the “rake” in poker jargon. Hence the term “rake rebate.” Most rake rebate websites offer about 20% of this rake given back to the player. A very select few give a slightly higher percentage back to the player.
The site setting the industry standard in rake rebates is www.rakerecycler.com. As more and more rake rebate programs pop up on the net, Rake Recycler is still one of the oldest and most trustworthy sites on the internet, offering rake rebate deals at the biggest and most reputable online poker rooms.
